Defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant will take on NorthEast United FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium on Sunday, with both sides chasing crucial points for very different reasons.

NorthEast United FC head into the clash looking to build on a resilient 1-1 draw against Kerala Blasters. Currently placed 11th with seven points, the Highlanders will be eager to make the most of home conditions and climb the standings with a statement result.

Head coach Juan Pedro Benali struck a fearless tone ahead of the contest, saying, “What do we have to lose? It is a game of 11 against 11. We know Mohun Bagan is one of the strongest teams, but we are ready to compete.”

Midfielder Jairo Samperio, who is returning to full fitness, added that the team feels physically ready for the challenge. “The last two games have been positive for me. The team has done a great job, and we are prepared for a tough match,” he said.

On the other hand, Mohun Bagan Super Giant arrive with momentum after a dramatic 3-2 win over Punjab FC, sealed by a late free-kick from Jason Cummings. Goals from Jamie Maclaren and Sahal Abdul Samad had earlier kept them in the contest.

Sitting second on the table with 17 points, the Mariners have a clear objective—keep pace in the title race. An away win could temporarily take them to the top, underlining the importance of this fixture.

Head coach Sergio Lobera downplayed any pressure, insisting the team is driven by ambition. “We are not under pressure; we are motivated. With five games left, we are in a position to fight for the trophy,” he said.

The head-to-head record strongly favours Mohun Bagan, who have won nine of their 12 meetings against NorthEast United, including a 2-0 victory in Guwahati in their last encounter.

Midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad emphasised the importance of maintaining momentum. “Every match now is crucial. We need to keep working hard and contribute to the team’s success,” he noted.
